John Wick (2014)

Keanu Reeves was reaching a point of no return in his career... The last decade was stained by doubtful romantic comedies or dreadful dramas and all those movies emphasised how limited Keanu is as an actor. Then John Wick arrived, and it is probably, out of the blue, one of the best action movies ever made. It's funny the way the duo of first time directors (who are also stuntmen in various successful action movies) cast Keanu Reeves as John Wick, because we are talking about a character that is mostly bland, but incredibly stylish, and stylishly fun to watch. And that is probably the role Keanu was born to perform. John Wick is essentially a B-movie that assumes its personality and purpose from the very beginning, which is to entertain the audience with a solid action movie. But the fact is there is something about John Wick that places it higher and distinguishes it from other good and solid action movies. The fighting and shooting scenes are some of the most believable and effective scenes to ever hit the theatres. Besides this, John Wick transmits a comfortable feeling inside its unrealistic and hilariously exaggerated plot that will leave you cheering on your seat for this doggy and muscle car lover vigilante to wipe all the bad guys out. Even if set in New York, John Wick succeeds in building an unique world with unique characters from its unrealistic dark humour tone, mixed with an over-intense soundtrack, that will make you want to watch the movie again. Above all this, the directing technique is surprisingly good. The colours and the way the camera moves are a pure delight to watch. This is a movie with an incredible flow, where movement is the key. Could it be more pure than this? John Wick is the best movie Keanu has done since The Matrix. And I can't wait to watch it again.
