The most successful movie of the year so far in Portugal and France, La Cage Dorée is a dramatic like comedy about a portuguese family emigrated in France for 30 years. Ruben Alves, the director, is himself the son of a portuguese couple emigrated in France, being La Cage Dorée an homage to his own parents. And what an homage! La Cage Dorée is the perfect depiction of that generation of portuguese emigrants, the hard working, humble and low self esteemed employees that refuse to forget the simple things they love in Portugal, such as good food, beer, football and even gossip. Having a part of my family emigrated in France as well, I was astonished by how accurate and real this representation was, mixing french and portuguese in the dialog. Plus the gap between french-portuguese youth and this older generation is masterfully recreated, being hard to find anyone in the audience that would not connect with this movie. The characters are rich and detailed, with very good interpretations, particularly by Rita Blanco with a character that will reach you. The directing goes well with the line of modern french cinema of the likes of François Ozon, with beautiful photography, great picture plans and a very fine dose of european humor. La Cage Dorée was indeed a very positive surprise, standing as a role model for portuguese and even french movies to come.

O filme mais bem sucedido do ano até agora em Portugal e França, a Gaiola Dourada é uma comédia dramática acerca de uma familia de portugueses emigrados em França há 30 anos. O realizador Ruben Alves é ele próprio filho de um destes casais emigrantes em França, sendo este Gaiola Dourada uma séria homenagem aos seus pais. E que homenagem! A Gaiola Dourada é a recreação perfeita desta geração de emigrantes, os trabalhadores esforçados, humildes e com baixa auto-estima que se recusam a esquecer as coisas simples que amam no seu país, como a boa comida, a cerveja, o futebol e mesmo os mexericos. Tendo parte da minha família emigrada em França, fiquei boquiaberto com quão exacta e realista esta representação é, misturando francês e português no diálogo, tal como se fala realmente. De somar que o fosso cultural entre esta juventude franco-portuguesa e a geração que emigrou nos anos 60 e 70 está soberbamente representado, sendo difícil para algum espectador não se rever de alguma forma neste filme. As personagens são ricas e detalhadas, com muito boas interpretações, em particular Rita Blanco, que interpreta uma personagem que não deixará o espectador indiferente. A realização acompanha a linha do cinema francês moderno de exemplares como François Ozon, com uma bela fotografia, excelentes planos de imagem e uma dose acertada de humor europeu. A Gaiola Dourada foi de facto uma surpresa muito positiva, representando um paradigma a seguir pelo cinema português e mesmo francês que estiver para vir.
