The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire arrives one year after the first movie, with a refined approach to its theme. In fact, director Francis Lawrence clearly listened to the critics of the first movie, and it is easy to see that he tries to refine the less well achieved scenes from the past, like the hunger games themselves. However, that is not enough. Catching Fire evolves from its predecessor, but unfortunately it just feels like an improved copy of the first one, at least in terms of structure. We would like to see a different kind of plot than the one Catching Fire presents, but well, that is the book's writer fault. Nevertheless, Catching Fire is a good blockbuster to watch. It is thrilling, it is involving, it is stylish, and it undoubtedly leaves the taste on the viewers mouth for the sequel. Plus, it is always a pleasure to watch Jennifer Lawrence being joined by the likes of Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Donald Sutherland or Woody Harrelson. It is undeniable that the movie presents directing quality for its kind. Some plot points here and there can be and are poor, but the overall balance is that this is a great entertaining flick and a good example of what entertaining cinema should be.
