John Maclean’s Slow West, his first movie to
date, presents an original approach to the western genre, like The Homesman
already did in 2015, that puts aside conventional characteristics of the genre
that recent westerns like True Grit still use. Slow West is a movie that
explores the senses of the viewer. The nature of some scenes is almost
palpable, surreal and even psychedelic in some moments. It’s an unexpected and
intriguing product, camping under the stars and feeling the rain after a night
of absinth, hallucinations and raw shootouts portrayed by a careless but brave
Kodi Smith-Mcphee and a lonesome cowboy with a cruel past through a very tough
and intriguing Michael Fassbender. Slow West is a gem inside its own world that
defies the genre and the meaning of “genres” itself.
