Interstellar (2014)

Insterstellar is by right one of the most anticipated movies ever. By right of its director and writter Christopher Nolan, that is. Like most of Nolan's films to date, Interstellar grabs the necessary requirements to deliver an entertaining movie with breaths of intellectuality and pure science that everyone in the audience will understand, or at least be comfortable enough to believe in. Interstellar can be both ravaged by critics for its science mumbo-jumbo and heart breaking scenes, and loved precisely for the same aspects. In other words, it does not have pretensions about being targeted for a specific audience. It is the other way around, it wants to be a movie for everyone, which can be judged both positively and negatively. Not everyone will think about it this way tough, as I believe the majority will think Interstellar is a rare work of art in cinema, just like they thought about Inception, The Dark Knight, Prestige, etcetera. That is not necessarily true. Nolan clearly tries to approach the likes of Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey and even Tarkovski's Solaris, but unfortunately he does not have the guts to make more than a light version of Kubrick's masterpiece. The necessary contemplative silence for some outer space scenes is only hinted at times, and the fast paced moments mixed with the loud hammering musical score composed by Hans Zimmer (even if the composer clearly tries to take a more sober approach than usual) works perfectly for entertainment purposes, but doesn't allow the movie to be something more than that. You'll be highly entertained tough, no doubt about it. On the other hand, the narrative itself and this story's characters are a delight to follow, even if they are not so deeply developed as they seem in first sight. On the visual side, Interstellar is an almost perfect movie. The truth is that for the kind of movie Interstellar is (a huge production and ambitious entertainment film about mystery, space and family relationships, mixed with a great musical score, great visuals and acting), the movie could hardly be better than this. It is hands down great, and there's no way around it. Of course it is flawed on some aspects written above, but that does not take away the qualities that it indeed demonstrates, and demonstrates in a truly solid way for an entertainment, and I will repeat "entertainment" movie. This is not a game changer, but whether we love him or hate him, Nolan is probably the best director doing this kind of "stellar" movies nowadays. It's far, very far far away from the artistic masterpiece of 2001: A Space Odyssey, tough. In fact, these two movies should never be used on the same sentence again because they aren't even on the same genre nor they have similar intentions. Did I have fun watching it? Yes, I did. A lot. And that's the only criteria that should be used here.
