Based on a true story, Fruitvale Station follows a young black man through the new year's eve, father of a little child, that struggles for a better life and opportunities. For sure, Fruitvale Station is a movie whose message will please to the average audience, so we can say this is a safe movie to direct. However, it's on the technical part that it stands out. The directing and camera work drinks inspiration from the likes of Aronofsky's "The Wrestler", and director debutant Ryan Coogler deserves credit at just 26 year's old. The movie has indeed glimpses of intelligence, mainly for the assertive way in which he balances the crowd pleaser storyline and the quality directing. However, that balance has an odd feeling, not sure if fresh, naive or even clueless.
