I'll just point out what no one has the guts to say: After Earth is not a bad movie, actually it is a pretty good one. Just like any other Shyamalan movie, it does not expand itself, choosing a subject and maintaining itself faithful to it. Like the village in The Village, the country family on Signs or the doctor patient relation in The Sixth Sense, Shyamalan never involves too many characters on his plot, and this is no exception, totally focusing on absent father-insecure son relationship, set in an incredible abandoned future Earth. It feels like he creates a mini-world for his characters, and that feels comfortable, adding a signature that old Shyamalan fans should recognize. In terms of plot, you could say this is a mix between the flashbacks of 127 Hours and the survival woods' running in Apocalypto, with a very appealing sci-fi background that you should embrace as a viewer. It is suspenseful, entertaining, beautiful to watch, Will Smith remains awesome and there are great, and I really mean great, classic Shyamalan directing moments here. The only finger you can honestly point at this movie is Jaden Smith's skill as an actor, which is seriously questioned in two scenes here. But don't take me wrong, After Earth is not a great movie, it is a good average one that totally doesn't deserve the treatment its receiving. It seems there is an anti-Shyamalan campaign going on, and it needs to be stopped.
